Phonic Smoke is a tribute to our upbringing in small towns. We grew up in south central Minnesota, USA which is primarily dominated by the agriculture industry. This is where our friendship and music relationship began. These small towns are slowly decaying but have had a profound impact on our lives. We still have amazing family and friends who live in the area. This is our homage to them, our early lives and a spark that would create Kindly Spoken Thieves.

All harmonic sounds were derived from the acoustic guitar. This represents a dry, rustic vibe similar to the rural area of our heritage. The acoustic guitar was processed through a combination of loopers, analog effects and digital effects. These represent the changing times. We managed to sneak in some samples on a few songs which were recorded on the fly using a live mic.

The songs were performed and recorded in two sessions. All songs were written during these sessions. The first session happened at Steve’s cabin on Big Kandiyohi Lake, MN. The second session happened at Josh’s house on Shady Ridge Road in Hutchinson, MN.
